AIDA TOMESCU

Born in Bucharest, Romania in 1955, Aida Tomescu has been living and working in Australia since 1980.

 

Tomescu completed a Diploma of Art (Painting) at the Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest (1977) and a Post Graduate Diploma of Art at the City Art Institute, Sydney (1983). Aida was the inaugural winner of the prestigious LSFA 21 Fellowship in 1996 and since been awarded the Sulman Prize (1996), Wynne Prize (2001) and the Dobell Prize for Drawing, Art Gallery of New South Wales (2003).

 

Aida Tomescu has exhibited widely throughout her career and has works held in most major public collections throughout Australia as well as the National Museum in her homeland of Romania. Her work has been included in many group exhibitions including Abstraction Now, Shepparton Art Gallery (2010); Contemporary Encounters, NGVA (2010-11); the Sulman Prize: Finalists Exhibition Art Gallery of New South Wales (2009, 2008, 2006, 2003, 1996), Wynne Prize Exhibition Art Gallery of New South Wales (2001, 1999), Building a Collection National Gallery of Victoria (2009), La Trobe University Art Museum, Melbourne (2008), Masters of Emotion Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery (2007).

 

Karen Woodbury Gallery was very pleased to show works by Aida Tomescu at the Melbourne Art Fair, 4 - 8 August and look forward to a solo exhibition of new paintings and works on paper in our Richmond gallery space from 20 October - 13 November 2010.
