Born in 1972, Del Kathryn Barton currently lives and works in Sydney. In 1993, she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales, where she was subsequently employed as a lecturer in drawing.
Since her first exhibition at Arthaus Gallery, Sydney in 1995, Del Kathryn Barton has held several major solo shows such as the whole of everything Del Kathryn Barton, Penrith Regional Gallery, NSW (2007); please.dont stop. Kaliman Gallery, Sydney (2006) thankyou for loving me, Karen Woodbury Gallery, Melbourne (2005); Girl, Ray Hughes Gallery, Sydney (2004) and Drawings and Objects, Ray Hughes Gallery, Sydney (2002).
She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions both locally and abroad, including The Archibald Prize, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (2008 & 2007); Dobell Drawing Prize, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (2007); Strange Beauty, Linden Centre for Contemporary Arts, Melbourne (2007); The Archibald Prize, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (2007); National Works on Paper Award, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, Victoria (2004 and 2002); Octopus 4: More Real Than Life, Gertrude Contemporary Art Space, Melbourne (2003); Anxiety: The Drawn Figure, Ivan Dougherty Gallery, Sydney (2001); and Half a World Away: Drawings from Glasgow, Sao Paolo and Sydney, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Centre, Buffalo, New York (2002).
As well as painting, sculpture and drawing are an integral part of Barton’s practice drawing imagery from the human form and experience. Featured on the cover of Australian Art Collector (issue 39) and listed among Australia’s 50 Most Collectible Australian Artists’ in Australia Art Collector 2006 (issue 35) and voted Australia’s Most Collectible Australian Artist in Australian Art Collector 2007 (issue 39). Barton was the winner of The Archibald Prize 2008 and finalist in 2007. Del has also been collaborating with the Sydney based fashion label Romance was Born since 2006.
Del Kathryn Barton is held in numerous prominent private and public collections, including BHP Billiton, Melbourne; Art and Australia, Sydney; Artbank; Museum of Old and New Art, Hobart; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; the RACV Art Collection, Melbourne; The Sir Hermann Black Gallery, University of New South Wales; and UBS, Sydney.
