Born in Brisbane in 1966, Jane Burton currently lives and works in Melbourne. In 1991, she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Photography) from the Tasmanian School of Art, Hobart, and in 1993, was awarded an Honorary Research Associate, Tasmanian School of Art, Hobart.
Particularly acclaimed among her solo exhibitions are Wormwood, Karen Woodbury Gallery, Melbourne (2007); I did it for you, Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne (2005); Available Light, Dickerson Gallery, Sydney (2004); The Fall, Bett Gallery, Hobart (2004); The Other Side, Dickerson Gallery, Sydney (2003); and Crossley & Scott, Melbourne (2002).
Jane has also participated in several important group exhibitions including City of Hobart Art Prize, Carnegie Gallery, Hobart (2007); Light Sensitive: Contemporary Australian Photography from the Loti Smorgon Fund, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; The Last Thing I Remember… Jane Burton, Lily Hibberd, Brie Trenerry, Monash University Museum of Art at Switchback Gallery, Gippsland Centre for Art and Design, and toured to Sydney University Art Gallery, Sydney; William and Winfred Bowness Photography Prize, Monash Gallery of Art, VIC (2006); Loaded, Gallery 101, Melbourne (2005); Good Looking: Narrative Photos Past and Present, The Ian Potter Centre, NGV Australia, Melbourne (2004); Anxious Bodies, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (2003); The Australian Photographic Portrait Prize, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (2003); and Moral Hallucination: Channeling Hitchcock, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2000).
Among her various awards and achievements, Jane has been the recipient of a London Studio Residency, Visual Arts/Craft Board of the Australia Council (2005); an Arts Development Grant, Arts Victoria (2003); and the Lloyd Rees Travelling Scholarship (1993), which enabled her to undertake a four-month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris.
Her work is held in private collections throughout Australia, as well as major public collections such as the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart; Newcastle Region Art Gallery; Monash University, Melbourne; Artbank; Australia Post; and Monash Gallery of Art.
