Born in Wangen, Germany in 1956, Magda Matwiejew arrived in Australia in 1958. She lives and works in Melbourne.

Since her first solo show at Pinacotheca, Melbourne in 1979, Madga has exhibited at Realities Gallery, Melbourne; Luba Bilu, Gallery, Melbourne; and Flinders Lane Gallery, Melbourne. Notable among the solo exhibitions showcasing her more recent digital art practice are Broken Spell (2008) Arabesque (2006) and Vavara: Beyond Memory (2004), all held at Karen Woodbury Gallery, Melbourne.

Her work has featured in many prominent digital art festivals both locally and abroad, including SonZhuang Art Museum, Beijing (2008); Digital Long Island Festival, IMAC Theatre, New York (2007); The Harries, National Digital Art Award, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane (2007, 2006 & 2005); IDAP ZAIM Art Space, Yokohama (partnership with Yokohama Art Project, City of Yokohama and the Japan Foundation) (2007); Athens Video Art Festival, Athens (2007); San Diego Women Film Festival, Museum of Photographic Arts and Reuben H. Magda was awarded Best Experimental Animation, The San Francisco Women’s Film Festival, San Francisco (2006), and was a finalist in the ACMI Atom Awards, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne (2006).

Significant group shows include White Mantle: The Winter Landscape in Australian Art, Geelong Gallery and Meeting Place, Keeping Place, George Adams Gallery, The Arts Centre, Melbourne.

Magda is represented in several major public and corporate collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; Geelong Gallery, Victoria; Australian War Memorial Art Collection, Canberra; Philip Morris Collection, Melbourne; The University of Melbourne; and BHP Billiton, Melbourne.
