Born in Hamburg, Germany in 1950, Alex Spremberg emigrated to Perth, Australia in 1982, where he has subsequently held positions as a lecturer in painting at Edith Cowan University; the Curtin University of Technology; and most recently, at the Western Australian School of Art, Design and Media.
For more than a decade, Alex has exhibited regularly at Galerie Dusseldorf, Perth with solo shows such as Paint Works (2005 & 2006); Gravity Works (2002); The Colour of Paint (2000); and Support (1993). Other important solo exhibitions include the acclaimed survey Painting 1976 -1994 at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, University of Western Australia (1994), as well as Alex Spremberg: paint and process (2004) and Alex Spremberg: paint works (2006), Karen Woodbury Gallery, Melbourne. Alex will be presenting a solo show at Karen Woodbury Gallery in 2008.
He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, both locally and abroad, including AC4CA (Australian Centre fro Concrete Art) at the G&A Studio Sydney (2006), The Moores Building, Fremantle (2005), and the SNO Group, Factory 11, Sydney (2005); Stock & Stable, Karen Woodbury Gallery, Melbourne (2005); BankWest Contemporary Art Prize, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (2004, 2002 and 2001); Image of Longing, Galerie Beeld & Aambeeld, Qua-art, Enschede, The Netherlands (2004); Konkret, Goddard de Fiddes, Perth (2004); Simple Art, Stella A Galerie, Berlin, Germany (2004); in abstract, Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, University of Western Australia (2003); and Side by Side, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth (2003).
Among his various awards and achievements, Alex has been the winner of the prestigious BankWest Contemporary Art Prize (2004); the Artitude Prize, Telethon Speech + Hearing (2005); and the People’s Choice Award, BankWest Contemporary Art Prize (2002). He has also received several grants, including a six-month residency in Basel, Switzerland, awarded by the International Artists Exchange Program (2006).
Alex is represented in many prominent public and private collections across the country, including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth; the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; the University of Western Australia, Perth; Curtin University of Technology, Perth; Edith Cowan University, Perth; Artbank; BankWest; Wesfarmers, Perth; and the Holmes à Court Collection, Perth.
